Save Your Petrol in Six Easy Ways

Petrol price is going up, and up and up. One thing for sure it will going down, AGAIN! So, the only way to save is…

Properly Inflated Tires
According to an exercise at Carnegie Mellon University, only 1 in 81 cars has the recommended air pressure in all four tires. Keep an accurate tire pressure gauge in your glove box (many gas station gauges give false readings) and check your pressure at least once a month when the tires are cold.
Average savings: 3%

Tailgating NASCAR Style
This is a little secret race car drivers have known about for years. Cruising just a few inches away from the car directly in front of you cuts down on wind resistance (”drag”). The front car pushes aside most of the air and your engine doesn’t have to work as hard. Plus you actually help the car in front because two vehicles moving together create less total resistance than one vehicle running alone.
Average savings: 16%

The Brick Trick
Critical water shortages were permanently averted years ago by the simple act of dropping a brick down everyone’s toilet tank. So why not get the same results in your car with a bucket full of gravel or decorative aquarium sand? Less money down your tank means more money in your pocket.
Average savings: 21%

Forward Momentum
It’s a simple law of physics: Objects at motion tend to stay at motion. Get your speed up to a few hundred MPH, then switch off the engine and coast a while. You’ll get where you’re going faster, and you’ll be sailing right past that smug prick in the hybrid.
Average savings: 33% to 42% depending on wind direction

Gravity’s Rainbow
This one takes a little advance planning, but the savings can really add up. Always drive downhill. You may not get to work or see your house as often but who cares? You’re on Newton’s dime now. It won’t use any more fuel than a kid sliding down a grassy hill on a sheet of cardboard, and it’ll be just as much fun.
Average savings: 54% plus

Cut Their Throats
U.S. oil and auto industry executives (just like the cigarette companies) have known for decades that petroleum is addictive and deadly, but did nothing about it. We’re all driving SUVs and luxury pickup trucks because of their greed and shortsightedness. Instead of rewarding the bastards with multi-million dollar bonuses and extravagant perks, we should be murdering them in their sleep.
Average savings: 0% but it’ll make us all feel much better about ourselves!

Engineering Marvel: The Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel (MMMBT)

The Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel (MMMBT), a 4.6-mile long combination bridge-tunnel system (named for the two ironclad ships that fought in the Hampton Roads harbor during the Civil War) connecting two Virginia communities across the mouth of the James River.

MMMBT

The tunnel is 4,800 feet long from portal to portal, and it was built by the immersed sunken tube method, comprised of 15 prefabricated segments each 300 feet long and with two 2-lane bores, placed by lay-barges and joined together in a trench dredged in the bottom of the harbor, and backfilled over with earth. Four percent (4%) maximum grades are utilized in the tunnel, and a 60 mph design speed. The traffic lanes in the tunnel are 13 feet wide, with 2.5-foot-wide ledges on either side of the roadway, and with 16.5 feet of vertical clearance from the roadway to the ceiling. The current shipping channel above the deepest part of the tunnel has 800 feet of horizontal width and 45 feet of vertical depth below the average low-tide water level, and the tunnel was designed and built deep enough to allow for a future enlargement of the shipping channel to 1,000 feet of horizontal width and 55 feet of vertical depth below the average low-tide water level.

The MMMBT opened in April 1992 after seven years of construction. The MMMBT cost $400 million to build, and it includes a four-lane tunnel that is 4,800 feet (1,463 m) long, two man-made portal islands, and 3.2 miles (5.1 km) of twin trestle. (Fabricating the tunnel portion of the bridge and lowering it into place cost $126 million alone.)

The Bosnian Pyramid: The First European Pyramid

I found this from a forum and quite amaze about it. It’s about a pyramid found in Bosnia, yeah, BOSNIA! Excavations is underway. You can get more info, latest news, etc. from these sites:

The Bosnian Pyramid, Visocica Hill, is the first European pyramid to be discovered and is located in the heart of Bosnia, in the town of Visoko. The pyramid has all the elements: four perfectly shaped slopes pointing toward the cardinal points, a flat top and an entrance complex.

Brief info:

There are also the ruins of a Medieval walled town, once the base of a Bosnian king Tvrtko of Kotromanic (1338-1391). Because of its similarities to the Pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacan, Mexico, it has been named the “Bosnian Pyramid of the Sun” (’Bosanska Piramida Sunca’). There are also a three smaller pyramids on the site, the Bosnian Pyramid of the Moon (’Bosanska Piramida Mjeseca’), Bosnian Pyramid of Earth, (’Bosanska Piramida Zemlje’) and Bosnian Pyramid of the Dragon ( ‘Bosanska Piramida Zmaja’).

Some cool shots:

It has been comfirmed that this is a man-made pyramid! I probably will keep in touch with this. Let see will it be the 8th wonder of the world!

Chicken-Egg Question Finally Solved: The Egg Came First!

Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

Chicken-eggAccording to a scientist, a philosopher and a chicken farmer, it was the egg, British newspapers reported.

The key to the age-old question apparently lies in the fact that since genetic material does not change throughout an animal\’s life, the first bird that evolved into a chicken must have initially existed as an embryo inside an egg.

Professor John Brookfield, from England\’s University of Nottingham, concluded that because of this, the living organism inside the eggshell would have had the same DNA as the chicken it turned into.

The specialist in evolutionary genetics was quoted in a number of newspapers as saying:

Therefore the first living thing which we could say unequivocally was a member of the species would be this first egg. The egg came first.

Brookfield\’s conclusion was backed up by Professor David Papineau, of King\’s College, London, and the chairman of the trade body Great British Chicken, Charles Bourns.

World’s Population Clock

Fancy about a clock that counts the world’s population? Here is an online clock that do that. It also counts the world’s productive land.

Link: http://popco.org/irc/popclocks/index.html

My 2 Cents

The counting rate for world’s population is fast, about 0.7 second per person, that means on average there is a newborn baby every 0.7 second!. Notice that the productive land counter (in hectares) is counting the opposite.
