Sony Transparent TV

No kidding! This “transparent” TV really exists, and it’s from Sony. Look at the screen, it’s like floating…and the speakers, freaking awesome!

It’s slightly more complex than just a piece of glass – normal glass cannot be projected onto as the light passes straight through.

I’d like to see how they project black onto the screen. Short of watching in a dark room its bound to look crap.

is the glass opaquing glass? the kind that you pass a current through and it becomes white opaque, kindof milky..

That’s kind of cool. It’d suck if you walked into it… I’ve done it with glass doors.

The TV display area is a liquid crystal matrix. LCD pixels can be entirely transparent if the conductor for delivering signal is ITO (Indium Tin Oxide). When the pixel is turned on polarization of the liquid crystal changes and letting through more or less light. Hence, the black is displayed by blocking all the light from passing through by making crystal polarization to perpendiular to the polarization layer. The light source in this case is not built into the TV and is supplied from behind (so it seems) and looks like a projector.

Over all a very neat, expensive impractical but cool looking idea.

just like a glass coffee table, it is going to be a nightmare to keep clean. But I guess if you can afford one of those, you can afford a maid.

TV is kind of interesting. Too bad all I see are two giant speakers that look like they’ll suck me into another dimension. very dumb. drop the stupid looking speakers and focus on the screen.

There really are a lot of idiots working at Sony.

    well then, you’re an idiot.

the screen should be biger, but then i guess all you need to do is put the projector a little further away. Get some freakin windex then!!!

so? I’d be more impressed by a white wall as a projector screen. At least that isn’t sitting awkwardly in the center of the room.
