Two Moons on 27 August 2006

Two moons will be visible on August 27!

Planet Mars will be the brightest in the night sky starting August. It will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye.

Moon

This will cultivate on August 27 when Mars comes within 34.65M miles of earth. Be sure to watch the sky on August 27 12:30 am GTM. It will look like the earth has 2 moons.

The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287.

So true. There will NOT be 2 moons. This was a message from 2003 that is being passed around and around and around. Check out this article with verifiable links.

Mars did make an extraordinarily close approach to Earth several years ago, culminating on 27 August 2003, when the red planet came within 35 million miles (or 56 million kilometers) of Earth, its nearest approach to us in almost 60,000 years. At that time, Mars appeared approximately 6 times larger and 85 times brighter in the sky than it ordinarily does. (The message quoted above was often reproduced with an unfortunate line break in the middle of the second sentence of the second paragraph, leaving some readers with the mistaken impression that Mars would “look as large as the full moon to the naked eye” and not realizing that the statement only applied to those viewing Mars through a scope with 75-power magnification.)

Although Mars’ proximity to Earth in August 2003 (referred to as a perihelic opposition) was a rare occurrence, the red planet comes almost as near to us every 15 to 17 years. To the unaided observer, Mars’ appearance in August 2003 wasn’t significantly larger or brighter than it is during those much more common intervals of closeness.

Mars had another close encounter with Earth in in 2005, but that occurrence took place in October (not August), and the red planet appeared about 20% smaller than it did during similar circumstances in 2003.

As Texas astronomer Torvald Hessel observed in a 2006 interview about the perennial “Mars Spectacular” message:
    Q: What’s the truth?

A: Mars gets close to Earth every two years. So, last year, Mars was very close. Three years ago, it was spectacularly close … And right now, I’m sad to say, Mars is actually behind the Sun; we can’t see it at all.

Q: How wide spread is this falsehood?

A: People get excited about it, start to send e-mail … and every August we see this e-mail coming back and I get a lot of e-mails about it, of course.

its not true!!!!!!! first when i heard about the (2MOONS) in the sky I was so shocked . the paragraph that says that the planet MARS will be the brightest in the night sky starting of august. So when i heard about this i started to go out everynight and look at the sky . nothing appeared even nothing looked speccially. from 2003 i started to get e-mails about this . but there is a new thing i know about the planet mars that it is behind the sun , so i think it will pass years to get closer to the earth.so i tell to the people to study about the planets and about years of planet around the sun.

Don’t feel bad Jennifer. I got sucked in by this hoax LAST year and I went out to look for several nights. Every other year Mars is incredibly visible and luckily for me, 2005 was one of those years. It was not as large as the moon though. It looked like small red flashlight beside the moon, but it was pretty kewl. You’ll have to wait til next August to see it again.
    Happy Gazing,

Well me and my daughter just came in from being outside, here at Chicago. And I dont know what we saw but it looked like the moon, half. And we walked inside the house and checked out the window to see it again. And it started to quickly disappear! And then it was gone!! It wasnt the moon regular color kinda like orange-yellow??
So whatever it was it wasnt the moon.

i ve got so confused about the 2 moons . some people say it appear and some say it isnt so please i would like from the nasa engineer to tell us all, if the two moons appeared or not because the NASA r the only people who know about the space and about what will happen in space.

wish this was going to happen, but unfortunately it’s an urban myth that has been circulating since 2003. See these sites for details:

    Dear Matt:

This is interesting, however the word you want is culminate (ie: this will culminate – not cultivate – in…).

i am afraid you got this a bit wrong.
the close encounter with mars HAPPENED on 27 August 2003 and was best seen in Australia. Hubble watch it as did many other BIg telescopes.
    Better luck next time!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dude..perhaps you should read the whole comment thread. We have already established AGES ago that this was a 2003 event and that smaller MARS events occur ever two years on the odd (i.e. 2007).

I have heard this, and tonight I am staying up until 11:30 (I’m central time) and I am going to watch for it. And if I don’t see it, I will stay up until 12:30 and see. I will comment you later, if I can find this sight again. I know a very good astrologist, and she said that her husband, who is also an astrologist, said that this time it is very acurate. So I believe her. And I’m watching.

YES, there will be a FULL MOON and a FULL LUNAR ECLIPSE tonight (august 27, 2007) starting just after midnight (pacific time). Should be lovely if the night is clear.

BUT THERE IS NOT GOING TO BE A MARS EVENT, ALSO KNOWN AS TWO MOONS. Geesh, I wish that stupid hoax would just die.
